The Soviet answer to the 5.56 introduced in 1974 and famous for the little air pocket in the bullet that gave it a nasty reputation. It fed the AK-74 and armed half the eastern bloc and flooded into America as cheap surplus that a whole generation burned through happily. The rule changes rearranged all of that.

Loads run 52 to 60 grain in surplus pattern FMJ mostly. Steel case is the value play where you can still find it. Supply shifted hard with the import situation so prices moved and the bargains take real hunting now.
