A clever fix for a wartime problem. When the Army pressed .45 ACP revolvers into service they needed moon clips to hold the rimless auto rounds and somebody in 1920 built a rimmed version that dropped straight into the cylinder without them. The .45 Auto Rim is that solution frozen in cartridge form. A charming piece of practical engineering history.
Loads run 200 to 230 grain in the scarce offerings that survive. A niche round priced for its specialty status in small boxes. The old revolver crowd and the handloaders keep it alive and buy it whenever it turns up.
