SIG and Federal necked the .40 S&W case down to 9mm bullets in 1994, chasing revolver-magnum performance in a service auto. The Secret Service and a handful of state agencies ran it for years, then the great 9mm consolidation thinned the ranks.

The load is essentially 125 grain, and the bottleneck case costs more to make — prices show it. Ammunition stays in production; contrarians with good pistols shop patiently and win.
